Can you do HGV training on an automatic car licence

If you hold an automatic car licence, you can still train to become an HGV driver in the UK. Your car licence does not prevent you from applying for a provisional HGV entitlement or taking the required tests.

The main point to understand is that a licence gained in an automatic HGV will normally restrict you to driving HGVs with automatic or automated transmissions. This is similar to the restriction on an automatic car licence.

What does an automatic HGV licence allow?

You can take your HGV training and practical test in an automatic vehicle. If you pass, your licence will cover the relevant HGV category, but with an automatic-only restriction.

This can still give you access to a wide range of driving work. Many modern distribution lorries, supermarket vehicles, fleet trucks, and larger delivery vehicles have automatic or automated gearboxes.

However, some employers use manual vehicles, particularly smaller operators, specialist transport companies, and certain older fleets. It is worth checking the type of vehicle used by employers in your area before choosing automatic-only training.

If you later want to drive manual HGVs, you can take another practical test in a manual vehicle. You do not usually need to repeat the whole process from the beginning.

The route from car licence to HGV

The usual route includes:

• Holding a full car licence, even if it is automatic-only
• Completing a D4 medical examination with an approved medical professional
• Applying for your provisional HGV entitlement
• Passing the required theory tests
• Completing practical HGV driver training
• Passing the practical driving test
• Completing the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, often called the Driver CPC, if you want to drive commercially

The vehicle category you choose depends on the work you want to do. Category C allows you to drive rigid HGVs, such as large delivery lorries. Category C+E allows you to drive an articulated lorry, once you have the required entitlement and training.

Is an HGV automatic easier to drive?

An HGV automatic can be easier for some new drivers because you can concentrate more on road position, mirrors, speed, and safe vehicle control. You do not need to manage a clutch or select gears manually in traffic.

You will still need to learn all the important HGV skills. These include vehicle checks, reversing, coupling if relevant, hazard awareness, braking, clearance, route planning, and protecting vulnerable road users.

Training in an HGV automatic is not a shortcut. You must meet the same medical, theory, safety, and practical driving standards.

Can automatic HGV training improve your pay?

For warehouse, shop, and van drivers, moving into HGV work can open the door to different roles and potentially better weekly pay. Your earnings will depend on your licence category, experience, working hours, location, and the employer.

Before booking, ask whether the training vehicle is automatic and whether the resulting licence restriction suits the jobs you want. If you already have particular employers in mind, check whether they accept drivers with an HGV automatic entitlement.
