Most people look up HGV training because the weekly pay in the warehouse or the shop is not stretching. Fair enough. Here is a honest picture of HGV driver pay in the UK.

Typical numbers

These are common ranges, not a promise:

• Class 2, rigid: about £29,000 to £45,000
• Class 1, trailer: about £38,000 to £58,000+

Nights, trunking, and overtime can push the top end. A quiet local day shift may sit nearer the bottom.

What changes the wage

• Nights. Unsocial hours usually pay more.
• Trunking. Long trunk runs can pay well. You might be away from home.
• Overtime. Easy to say yes when the bills are there. Watch your hours.
• Region. London and the South East often pay more. The Midlands has a lot of warehouse work. Scotland and the North can still be solid if you want to stay local.

Do not believe the highest advert

Job boards love a big number. That figure might include every extra going, or a job 80 miles away. Ask what the basic is, what the nights are, and what a normal week looks like.

From low pay to a driving wage

If you are on less than £20,000 now, even a first Class 2 job can change the week. That is the point of HGV training. You still have to pass. You still have to turn up. The licence is the door, not the job itself.
