Can you get an HGV licence at 18

The UK age rules for HGV training, what 18 year olds can do, and what still has to happen with the medical and tests.

Yes. In the UK you can start HGV training at 18 if you hold a car licence and you pass the medical. You do not have to wait until you are 21.

What 18 year olds still need

  • A valid UK car licence
  • The DVLA medical
  • Theory
  • Practical training and the test

Age is the door. It is not the whole job. Some firms prefer a bit more life experience. Others will take a newly qualified 18 year old on Class 2.

Is Class 1 realistic at 18?

Sometimes. It depends on the insurer, the firm, and you. We will not sell you a Class 1 dream if local firms only want Class 2 at that age. We will say what we are seeing.

Parents and money

If you are 18 and someone at home is helping with training costs, they can sit in on the call. Flexible finance is still no credit checks. We explain it to whoever is paying.
