HGV nights and trunking, is the extra pay worth it
How night shifts and trunking change HGV pay, and how to decide if those hours fit your life.
The big wage adverts often hide in the small print. Nights. Trunking. Overtime. That is where Class 1 money often sits.
What trunking is
Trunking is moving a load between depots, often on a set run. You might do nights. You might be away from your own bed. The pay can be good. The social life can take a hit.
What nights feel like
If you already do warehouse nights, you know the body clock problem. If you have kids at school, nights can wreck the week even if the money looks lovely.
Ask:
- How many nights a week, really?
- Is there a day-shift route after you have experience?
- What is the basic without nights?
Class 2 can still pay
You do not have to do nights to leave a low wage. Plenty of Class 2 work is days. The top end is lower. The sleep can be better.
Use the pay calculator and be honest about shifts.
Talk it through
Call 0800 820 3300 or leave your number. Say if nights are a yes, a maybe, or a never. We will match the licence to that, not to a poster.
