A practical route into HGV driving

If you work in a warehouse, shop, courier service, or as a van driver, moving into HGV driving could give you access to more regular hours and better weekly pay.

Which HGV licence do you need?

Most people start with a Category C licence, often called Class 2. This allows you to drive rigid vehicles over 3,500kg. It is commonly used for local deliveries, supermarket work, builders’ merchant deliveries, and multi-drop routes.

You may later choose to upgrade to Category C+E, often called Class 1. This allows you to drive an articulated lorry and can open up longer-distance, trunking, and distribution work.

What does the training involve?

Before practical training, you will need to complete the relevant medical and theory requirements. Practical training then covers the skills needed to drive a large vehicle safely and confidently.

Training normally includes:

• Vehicle safety checks
• Safe use of mirrors
• Positioning on urban and rural roads
• Junctions, roundabouts, and tight turns
• Reversing exercises
• Coupling and uncoupling, where applicable
• Safe loading and responsible driving
• Preparation for the practical test

A good instructor will also help you understand the working day. HGV driving is not only about passing a test. It can involve early starts, delivery paperwork, loading bays, customer contact, and working to realistic schedules.

After qualifying, you could search for HGV jobs South West employers advertise in Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Gloucester, Weston-super-Mare, Exeter, Plymouth, and nearby areas.

Available roles may include:

HGV driving can suit people who prefer working independently and want a practical career with clear responsibility. It is also worth considering the physical side of the job. Some roles involve unloading, securing loads, climbing in and out of the cab, and handling delivery equipment.

If you are currently a van driver, you may already have useful road knowledge and experience with customers, route planning, and delivery deadlines. Warehouse workers may also have valuable knowledge of loading procedures and stock handling.
