How to get an HGV licence in the UK

If you already hold a car licence, you can train for an HGV licence. You do not need a degree. You do not need to have driven a lorry before. You need to be 18 or over, pass a medical, pass theory, then learn in a real cab.

This guide is for people on warehouse, shop, or van money who want better weekly pay.

What licence you actually need

Most people start with Cat C, also called Class 2. That is a rigid truck. Supermarket work, refuse, local haulage.

Cat C+E, also called Class 1, adds a trailer. The pay is usually higher. You can go for Class 1 later if you want.

The steps, in order
